Published AI consulting prices in 2026 run from about $1,000 for a first dashboard to $1M or more for a language model trained from scratch. In mid-October, 5 of the 69 AI and data consultancies in the Brand Media Works competitor register published any figure for what their work costs. Where the others mention pricing at all, it is a free consultation, an engagement model with no figure, or a first phase priced after scoping.

Method note

The figures below come from the Brand Media Works competitor register: 457 pages from 99 firms, collected October 2026. Brand Media Works is an AI consulting and marketing data engineering firm for ecommerce brands. 69 of the 99 firms in the register at the time were AI and data consultancies, and this report covers those 69. The register holds each firm's homepage, service pages, case studies and articles, not only a dedicated pricing page. We recorded every price, fee and budget band those pages show, on the date shown, and describe each firm by the kind of work it does.

A firm is listed in the table only when it publishes a price, a fixed fee or a labeled budget band on its own site. Firms that route pricing through a discovery call or a custom proposal are not listed. No third-party surveys or analyst estimates are used in the table. Brand Media Works does not publish its own fees and is not listed.

The sample is a point-in-time snapshot of 69 consultancies, not the whole market. A firm that shows prices only on a page outside the register would be missed. Prices change, pages are updated, and a firm's scope at one price may not match your project. Treat every figure as a reference point, not a quote.

What do AI consultancies actually charge?

The five firms show very different entry points. The data analytics consultancy is the only one in this set that publishes an hourly rate, $100 an hour, alongside fixed-fee estimates. Its smallest listed engagement, a first dashboard from one source, is about $1,000 and about one week of work. A custom ETL build from one or two sources with automated refresh is about $4,000 over about two weeks.

The software development company publishes no line-item price. Its contact form offers budget bands from $20K to more than $300K, which tells a buyer roughly where to pitch a project but not what any deliverable costs. The AI development firm's figure comes from a 2026 cost guide for AI agents rather than a price list, and spans $5k pilots to $500k enterprise solutions. Both need a brief before real scoping starts.

Two firms price private AI work. The private AI consultancy sets up a private AI workspace from $10,000 fixed, with a monthly fee on top, and, after a discovery phase from $10,000, prices ongoing implementation at $10,000 to $50,000 a month. The generative AI developer starts fine-tuning an existing language model at $75,000, typically $75K to $150K over 3 to 4 months, and a domain-specific model trained from scratch at $300,000, rising to $1M or more over 6 to 12 months. For a brand weighing a private LLM, adapting an existing open model costs a fraction of training a new one, and the running cost comes on top: what a private LLM costs to run sets out the GPU and token prices.

The gap between a $1,000 dashboard and a $500k agent build is not arbitrary. The number of data sources, the degree of automation, whether the system acts on its own across channels and how much custom model work is needed all move the price. A buyer comparing these five price lists is not comparing like-for-like services.

Why do most AI consultancies publish no price?

64 of the 69 consultancies published no figure on the pages in the register. Of the 9 that mention pricing without one, 4 offer a free call or consultation, 3 describe engagement models such as retainers, fixed prices or revenue share, 1 prices a first fixed phase after scoping and 1 offers a money-back guarantee. Scope variability is a fair reason for complex builds, but it leaves buyers walking into discovery calls with no reference point.

BCG's June 2026 research on agentic marketing shows who is now doing the buying:

Roughly half of CMOs say that the marketing organization now leads AI investment decisions in the function, compared with 14% led by the CEO or board and 15% led by strategy.

BCG, Moving the Agentic Marketing Transformation from Illusion to Reality (June 2026)

That puts AI buying decisions with people accountable for campaign results, who often have no benchmark for data engineering or private LLM fees. The same BCG research found that 94% of CMOs say CEO expectations of marketing have increased significantly over the past two years. Pressure to move fast makes it more likely a buyer anchors on the first number a vendor names.

How does AI maturity change what you need to buy?

Where your team sits on the AI maturity curve decides whether you need a $1,000 dashboard or a six-figure agent build. BCG's June 2026 research found that only 8% of CMOs run campaigns in which multiple agents operate autonomously. Most teams are still automating workflows or piloting single agents, so most projects in 2026 are scoped, bounded builds rather than full agent infrastructure.

If your first problem is scattered data, the first project is a data integration build that pulls separate sources into one view of customer value and channel performance. Brands selling across several channels often find each one keeps its own data, with no shared view of attribution. That is what a custom ETL build solves, and the published estimate of about $4,000 for a small one is a useful floor.

For larger brands, the scope widens toward pipeline automation, personalized content at scale and readiness for AI shopping agents. McKinsey estimates that by 2030 agentic commerce could orchestrate up to $1 trillion in US B2C retail revenue, and $3 trillion to $5 trillion globally. Building for that channel is a larger and less defined scope than a first dashboard, and it is where the six-figure ranges in the table start to apply.

What problems are buyers trying to solve when they hire an AI consultancy?

Buyers at DTC and ecommerce brands are not buying AI as a concept. They want to integrate larger and more varied data without building a data team from scratch, join online, in-store and phone channels into one customer view, and allocate budget more precisely across paid channels. These problems have defined scopes, and they map well to the fixed-fee and banded projects in the table.

A second problem is headcount. Many brands want more marketing output without adding full-time staff, which means systems that run and optimize campaigns with less manual work. Before scoping that kind of project, it helps to understand what private AI means for a marketing team.

A focused discovery conversation is usually faster than a formal RFP. The scope of a data engineering or private LLM project is defined during scoping, not before it. If you run a DTC or ecommerce brand, knowing what each type of engagement involves will sharpen your brief and make any vendor conversation more productive.

What does this mean for a brand of a specific size?

How much does an AI consultant cost for a $20M ecommerce brand? applies Gartner's 2026 budget averages to a $20M brand, which puts about $239,000 a year into AI. It then sets the published prices for each type of first project, most of them $1,000 to $10,000, against that budget.

What does marketing data engineering cost?

How much marketing data engineering costs for an ecommerce brand sets out what data consultancies publish, from about $1,000 for a first dashboard and about $4,000 for a pipeline from one or two sources to $30,000 and more for a data warehouse. It adds the monthly cost of the tools that move, store and model the data, and what to ask for in every quote.

What does an AI automation agency charge?

How much an AI automation agency charges sets out published prices for automation work: paid assessments from $999, defined automation builds from about $8,000, single-workflow builds at $18,000 to $35,000 at one firm, and monthly support from about $340. It explains when to pay per workflow and when to pay per month, and what to ask before signing.

What does an AI agent cost to build and run?

How much AI agent development costs sets out published build prices, from about $8,000 for a single-purpose agent to $180,000 or more for a multi-agent platform, with ecommerce support and retail agents at $30,000 to $200,000. It adds what an agent costs to run each month, the first-year cost of three agents an ecommerce brand might build first, and when to buy a ready-made tool instead.

What does AI implementation cost beyond the build?

How much AI implementation costs for an ecommerce brand sets out published prices for each stage, from assessments at $999 and single retail use cases at $4,000 to $10,000 to pilots at $10,000 to $40,000, and the costs a development quote leaves out. It builds a 90-day pilot budget for a DTC brand and shows what scaling to production adds, at 3 to 8 times the pilot at one firm.

How do you choose an AI consulting firm?

How to choose an AI consulting firm for an ecommerce brand sets out the six kinds of firm that sell AI consulting, what to check with each, and seven questions for the first call. It covers how to structure a short paid first phase with a written stop point, and the answers that should make a brand walk away.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire an AI consultant?

AI consultants charge about $100 to $150 an hour at junior level and $300 to $500 or more an hour for senior experts, according to one AI consulting firm's published cost guide, which puts project pricing at $10,000 to $150,000 for pilots and proofs of concept and monthly retainers at $2,000 to $50,000 (read 18 October 2026). The same guide puts an in-house AI team at $400,000 to over $1 million a year.

What is a typical starting budget for an AI consulting project at a DTC brand?

Among consultancies that publish a figure, entry points run from about $1,000 for a one-source dashboard, through $10,000 for a private AI workspace setup, to $20K, the lowest budget band one software development company lists on its contact form. Most consultancies publish no starting figure at all.

Do AI consultancies charge by the hour or by project?

Both models exist. One data analytics consultancy publishes a single rate of $100 an hour and quotes most projects as a fixed price up front, with ongoing support billed hourly. A private AI consultancy prices ongoing work by the month, from $10K. Most of the other consultancies in the register do not disclose their billing structure on their public pages.

How do I know whether I need a small data project or a large AI build?

Count the data sources you need to connect, the degree of automation you want, and whether the system must work with little human oversight. A first dashboard from one source is a bounded project. A multi-agent campaign system is not, and the two need very different budgets and timelines.
