For most ecommerce brands, ChatGPT Business is enough: it is self-serve, priced per seat, and carries the same no-training default as Enterprise. Enterprise earns its place when the brand needs data stored in a set region, tighter limits on who at OpenAI can see conversations, its own retention rules, SCIM user provisioning or invoice billing, or has more than 200 people on the plan. This comparison uses OpenAI's own pricing, help and privacy pages, read on 25 October 2026, and is from Brand Media Works, an AI consulting and marketing data engineering firm for ecommerce brands.

Both plans encrypt data at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher, and OpenAI signs a Data Processing Addendum for either. API use is not included in a Business subscription and is billed separately. ChatGPT Team was renamed ChatGPT Business on 29 August 2025, so older guides that mention Team are describing this plan.
What does ChatGPT Business cost for a marketing team?
Business is priced per seat, and a workspace can mix the two seat types. OpenAI says a Premium seat gives "5x more usage than standard, with no 5-hour limit"; Standard seats include set rate limits, and workspace credits can be bought for use beyond them.

Enterprise has no published price to compare against. A brand weighing the two should ask OpenAI's sales team for a quote at its own seat count and judge whether the Enterprise controls below are worth the difference.
When does an ecommerce brand need Enterprise?
- It must keep customer content in a set region. Data residency is offered only to eligible API customers and new Enterprise and Edu customers, in Australia, Canada, Europe, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the UAE, the UK and the US. A brand selling into Europe with a policy that customer data stays there needs Enterprise, not Business.
- It wants fewer people at OpenAI able to see conversations. The access rules are narrower on Enterprise, which matters when staff paste order histories or customer messages into prompts.
- It manages staff through an identity provider. SCIM provisioning and role-based access are Enterprise features, so leavers lose access when their account is closed centrally.
- Finance needs invoices and contracts. OpenAI says invoice billing, purchase orders, net terms, zero data retention and BAAs need a contracted offering instead of self-serve Business.
- The team is larger than 200. OpenAI sizes Business for teams of 2 to 200 employees.
If none of those apply, Business carries the same training default, the same encryption and the same SOC 2 Type 2 audit, at a published price.
Where do the two plans fall short for customer data?
On both plans, conversations are stored on OpenAI's systems, and OpenAI may run business data through automated content classifiers and safety tools. Residency adds limits, not a guarantee that everything stays in region: OpenAI's residency article says account data, billing details and other metadata are out of scope, and that processing such as authentication and routing may still happen outside the chosen region.
OpenAI's own pages also differ on where in-region inference is offered. Its residency help article, updated in October 2026, lists Europe, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, with feature limits in the UAE. Its business data page says eligible customers can opt into in-region GPU inference "in the U.S. or Europe". A brand that depends on UAE inference should confirm it in the contract.
